Mount Auburn Cemetery Candle Lighting Service – Bigelow Chapel
Projection Mapping & Lighting Design
Each year on the Winter Solstice, Mount Auburn Cemetery hosts its Candle Lighting Service, a long-standing tradition centered on reflection, remembrance, and community.
In collaboration with MASARY Studios, the experience was reimagined to incorporate projection mapping and lighting that would elevate the ceremony while preserving its tone and intent.
AVFX was brought in to support the technical execution.
The Challenge
This was not a typical projection mapping installation:
- The environment required a restrained, respectful visual approach
- The content needed to enhance the experience without overwhelming it
- The projection surface, Bigelow Chapel, required precision to maintain architectural integrity
Every decision had to support the emotional weight of the event.
The Solution
AVFX provided technical support across projection mapping and lighting, ensuring seamless delivery of the creative vision:
- Precision alignment of projection mapping across the chapel façade
- Lighting design that complemented the projection and natural ambiance
- Close collaboration with MASARY Studios to ensure fidelity to the artistic intent
The focus was on subtlety, clarity, and cohesion.
The Outcome
The result was a visually refined and immersive experience that enhanced the Candle Lighting Service without disrupting its atmosphere.
Projection and lighting became part of the ceremony itself, reinforcing the tone of the evening and deepening the connection for attendees.
