Celebrating Australian Beauty with Immersive Sound and Light

Immersive Light and Sound: A Journey Through Time and Nature

Stepping into the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, visitors were transported back to the 18th century to embark on a voyage with Captain James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks. The exhibition, Beauty Rich and Rare, invited audiences to relive the 1770 expedition of the HMS Endeavour—the first recorded European contact with Australia’s eastern coastline.

Commissioned by the National Library of Australia and brought to life by AGB Creative, this digital installation illuminated Australia’s extraordinary natural beauty. Through vivid recreations of original journals and illustrations, visitors were immersed in a 20-minute visual and auditory journey celebrating the continent’s biodiversity and the enduring human spirit of exploration.

Technical Excellence Behind the Scenes

To achieve the exhibition’s breathtaking quality, AGB Creative partnered with AVFX to deliver the technical foundation behind the experience. AVFX engineered and installed a 64-foot projection array featuring five synchronized screens and a custom surround sound system.

Every frame and audio cue was meticulously calibrated to create a seamless environment—one that honored the expedition’s historic significance while captivating modern audiences through immersive light and sound. The precision of this design allowed guests to not only view the story but feel it unfold around them.

Bridging History and Modernity

Beauty Rich and Rare stands as a powerful example of how historical storytelling and advanced event technology can work together to inspire. By blending centuries-old illustrations with cutting-edge projection and sound design, the exhibition created a bridge between past and present—preserving history while showcasing innovation in experiential storytelling.

The installation remained on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History through July 5, 2020, allowing thousands of visitors to experience one of the most extraordinary journeys in history through a new, multisensory lens.
